Greens Candidate for Surfers Paradise and environmental scientist Dean Hepburn has called for the State Government and Gold Coast City Council to act quickly to defend South Stradbroke Island from the advances of predatory developers. "So far these authorities seem to be dragging their feet on protecting the stunning natural island known as South Stradbroke" he said.
According to a report on the ABC, a Gold Coast City Councillor says he has been approached by companies wanting to further develop Stradbroke Island.
"This island is the only place the golden wallaby can be found and is home to 160 bird species and 35 species of butterflies. Its current zoning of Open Space/ Nature Conservation is not adequate and the Island needs to be further protected under legislation, to prevent more resorts and other developments taking place. I call on the Government to quash rumours that they are in the process of extinguishing leases with a view to giving developers the go ahead" Mr. Hepburn explained.
Greens (NSW) MLC Ian Cohen will chair an Upper House inquiry into a sustainable water supply for Sydney including the Kurnell desalination project.
“I am pleased that the committee agreed that the inquiry should proceedâ€, Mr Cohen said today.
“This will be an opportunity for the parliament to properly assess the environmental and economic effectiveness of the proposed desalination plant while looking at the alternatives including demand management, recycling and rain water tanks,†Mr Cohen said.
Terms of reference:
That General Purpose Standing Committee No 5 inquire into and report on a sustainable water supply for Sydney and, in particular:

The Save the Spit campaign goes on....
The next meeting to discuss strategies is
Thursday 14 April at 5.30pm at the Puppet Theatre on McIntosh Island, Surfers Paradise.
Interested people are welcome to attend.
Please help if you can - and let others know.
It was good to see the support at the Rally last Sunday at the Spit. About 2000 people attended the Rally. The speakers were informative and there was universal support for the motion against the cruise liner terminal.
Support is strong to Save the Spit amongst surfers, dog owners, families, fishermen, commercial and recreational, the adjacent community groups and environmental groups. So far 3000 people have signed the petition, but the organisers hope for 6000 at least.
copies of the petition can be obtained from Gecko 5534 1412.
