11th September 2006 - The Greens continue to build their voter base on the Gold Coast with nearly 17,500 voters giving them their first vote representing a 13% increase in primary votes since the 2004 election.
Half of those who voted for the Greens on the Gold Coast did not allocate preferences, with as many as 60% withholding preferences in Gaven.
"This result shows that Greens voters have faith that the Greens will eventually be represented in government on the Gold Coast and are not just a preference machine Gaven candidate" Glen Ryman said today.
The Greens are calling for Queensland women to have a voice in Parliament, something they currently believe to be absent.
The Greens candidate for Southport, Carla Brandon, pointed out that while most political parties only pre-select women candidates in about 30% of electorates, the Greens will be fielding more women than men on the Gold Coast in the State Election on September the 9th.
Women candidates have been selected by the Greens in Albert (Marella Pettinato), Broadwater (Julie-Ann Teluk), Currumbin (Inge Light), Robina (Lara Pape) and Southport (Carla Brandon).
“This shows that the Greens are the only party serious about getting the gender balance right in Parliament and the only party that can be taken seriously on women’s issues†said Ms Brandon.
Blood and offal flows freely in Gold Coast and other Queensland canals and rivers thanks to the continued inaction of our MP’s.
The Greens candidate for Surfers Paradise Dean Hepburn wrote to Premier Beattie two years ago yet all relevant state departments who responded have continued to pass the buck.
‘Both the Department of Environment and Department of Fisheries and Natural Resources said that throwing blood and offal into local canals and rivers wasn’t their problem’ said Mr. Hepburn, a consulting Environmental Scientist.
'I then wrote to Surfers Paradise Liberal MP John-Paul Langbroek who said he wanted to help but has since done absolutely nothing’.
A proposal for a 6 lane highway along Surfers Paradise beach has been met with laughter by the Greens. They say it the latest in a long line of stupid, even insane proposals that Gold Coasters have seen in recent years.
'While some people in power are seriously considering this, all of the people I have spoken to were either shaking their heads or laughing' said Dean Hepburn, Greens candidate for Surfers Paradise.
'When I first saw the picture and the headline in the Gold Coast Bulletin I had to laugh' Mr. Hepburn said. 'Only a couple of years ago we had a proposal for a 50 foot statue of a lifeguard on Wavebreak Island. Then we had cruise ships at the Spit and now we have this. I can't wait for the next ridiculous proposal' he added.
You don't have to wait until we hand you one of these at a polling booth. The Gold Coast Greens How To Vote cards can be found below:
