The Greens called today for "solar on every roof" as a way of increasing the security of the supply of electricity and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Most electricity in Queensland is generated using climate damaging coal fired power stations.
"With the huge amount of residential development on the Gold Coast, we are in a great position to reduce greenhouse emissions and costs to consumers by making a solar panel and PVCs (photo-voltaic cells) a requirement for every new home" said Julie-Ann Teluk, Greens candidate for Broadwater.
The Sunshine State must be one of the best places in the world to introduce this technology.
"The introduction of such technology can have positive economic impacts on families as well. Some households will generate enough electricity through solar technology to sell electricity back to the electricity grid. This also starts to build a real sense of personal responsibility in the minds of our consumers" Ms Teluk went on to suggest.
A Queensland Green initiative is to fund solar energy at the household level by allowing infrastructure costs to be paid for through quarterly energy bills over the life of the solar panel and cells.
The Greens are also in favour of energy companies being required to provide a range of alternative energy options including energy conservation measures, also to be paid off through power bills over the life of the product.
Did you know that the Commonwealth government is actually reducing its subsidies for solar technology? The Greens believe it is therefore very important that the State Government immediately put in place incentives for householders to capture solar energy that is free, clean, limitless and currently going to waste.
