Put Surfers beach highway proposal in the loony bin

A proposal for a 6 lane highway along Surfers Paradise beach has been met with laughter by the Greens. They say it the latest in a long line of stupid, even insane proposals that Gold Coasters have seen in recent years.

'While some people in power are seriously considering this, all of the people I have spoken to were either shaking their heads or laughing' said Dean Hepburn, Greens candidate for Surfers Paradise.

'When I first saw the picture and the headline in the Gold Coast Bulletin I had to laugh' Mr. Hepburn said. 'Only a couple of years ago we had a proposal for a 50 foot statue of a lifeguard on Wavebreak Island. Then we had cruise ships at the Spit and now we have this. I can't wait for the next ridiculous proposal' he added.

'The sad thing is some people in power will be seriously looking at this proposal. What they really need to do is concentrate on getting more people out of their cars. If we had a more substantial and more efficient public transport system then this would not be a problem. The rising costs of fuel, maintenance and registration mean cars are becoming too great a luxury for many people. Many elderly people too want to give up their car but have no adequate transport alternatives'.

"As this city moves towards high density and more private car use, our hospitals will fill up with people suffering chronic lung problems associated with breathing toxic chemicals. This has happened in other expanding cities and it will happen here unless we learn from their mistakes' added Mr. Hepburn.
